On occasion, there is an opportunity to explore a theme on a guitar and indulge my own curiosity and preferences. Check back often for updates or email me if you are interested in owning one of these curations.
On the bench now: Spalted Chen chen Modéle Encore
Inspired by a remarkable veneer flitch, this guitar promises to be one of the most striking guitars I've built.
Estimated completion August 2021. Details and specifications below gallery.
Chen Chen (Antiaris toxicaria) is an African hardwood. Often referred to as 'white sapelle' the material is usually appreciated for its homogenous white colour and ribbony lustre. In the case of this veneer, the tree would have been exposed to a fungus during its life cycle triggering a process called spalting resulting in the extraordinary zone lines and shift in pigmentation.
This guitar is a Modéle Encore and uses 3-ply laminated construction for the back and sides. The soundboard is torrefied Sitka spruce with the traditional 'pliage' construction behind the bridge. The guitar will be bound in a deluxe torrefied maple binding and will have a grafted torrefied maple neck.
Every Park Guitar is a tasteful balance between authenticity and subtle originality, an instrument that is both a classic and a unique expression.
