Reclaim + Repair: The Mahogany Project
This guitar is constructed with vintage mahogany from the Museum of Vancouver's collection. The wood was originally sourced by a boating manufacturer and was stored for many years after their facility closed. The custodians of the material donated it to the museum's upcycling program and local artists and crafts people were invited to transform this vintage material for a 12 month exhibition.
The back and sides for this guitar were re-sawn from the old planks and sanded to veneer thickness for laminating to add stability. The sides even feature a pair of filled holes from having nails driven through them sometime in the past. The neck is from a different plank of the same material carefully selected for its quarter sawn quality with a two way truss rod added for extra adjustment.
