Report from the Montreal Guitar Show

In early July I had the pleasure of attending the Salon de Guitare in beautiful Montreal, Quebec.  It was an extraoridinary event, with fine guitars as far as the eye could see.  Usually at these events, my guitars are the only Selmer/Macacaferri style guitars represented, so I was pleased to find a number of my gypsy jazz peers showing their instruments in Montreal.  Maurice Dupont, Stefan Hahl and Michael Dunn were all in attendance with their beautiful guitars, and I was pleased to make the acquaintance of a number of local Quebecois luthiers building instruments in this style.  There seems to be voracious appetite for Jazz Manouche in Montreal, and I was impressed by the number of accomplished players who tried my instruments.

The highlight for me was making the acquaintance of Christine Tassan and Lise-Anne Ross.  As you might imagine, it is exceptional to meet other women involved in gypsy jazz, and their command of the style and level of musicianship was marvelous.  Take a look at the website of their band Les Imposteurs and definitely buy their CD! Another wonderful moment was having John Jorgenson and Kevin Nolan stop by my table.  On their tour through the show they put all the gypsy jazz guitars through their paces and always drew a crowd.  I’m sure they broke several by-laws with the decibel levels they were able to achieve. One of the best things about attending guitar shows is the opportunity to catch up with fellow guitar making friends.  Two of my favourites are Judy Threet and Linda Manzer.  Here is a photo of Judy and I showing off our gift from Linda – flowery pliers.  Just what every girl needs…! Judy & Shelley
